This phenomenological study is to describe and understand the nature of the African dancing and drumming community in Tallahassee, Florida, and its function within its participants’ lives as focused on from a group paradigm using a participant case study design. The basic research question is what are the factors that allow African dancing and drumming to help build “community” as the participants describe community? This research uses social survey document analysis, participant observation, interviews (personal and oral history), and focus group methodology to (1) provide an accurate historical account of the development, major milestones, and contributors to the Tallahassee African dance and drum scene, (2) determine what the participants mean by the term “community” and establish a definition of community based on their meaning utilizing the McMillan and Chavis (1986, 1996) model, and (3) identify what factors led to the creation and sustaining of this sense of community.;Based on my research, I was able to develop a context specific definition for the term community: The Tallahassee African Dance and Drum community consists of multi-generation members, relating and functioning like a family, providing support and energy for one another, while paying homage to the African cultural traditions, developing through an organic evolution and maintaining through a love for the art. Microbial biomass and degrading residues have been reported to play an important role in the sequestration of carbon into soil stable carbon pool, while this control is poorly elucidated. To better understand the microbial involvement on the stabilization of carbon in soils, I used biomarkers (PLFAs and amino sugars) to investigate microbial role in various projects. Furthermore, the protocol of biomarker amino sugar determination was particularly evaluated, scientific concerns were developed, and relevant methodology mechanisms were explored. The study of soil profiles (Ch. 3) revealed that amino sugars preferentially accumulated in the subsoil, supporting the hypothesis that microbial metabolites are refractory and that they may contribute to terrestrial carbon storage. Microbial residue abundance, production and transformation in soils are affected by vegetative species in situ and laboratory experiments (Ch. 4-5). Further discussion on the interpretative traits of biomarker PLFA and amino sugars allow breaking a new path to study the dynamics of soil carbon transformation among different microbial regimens. Additionally, application of isotope dilution method incorporating with mass spectrometry technique suggests the newly biosynthesized amino sugar-glucosamine may be more stable than extant in soil carbon storage (Ch. 6-7). The model definition, boundary conditions, and results of these simulations are presented in the following dissertation.;In the first material system investigated MD simulations are used to probe the structure and stability of alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold nanoparticles. Numerous results and observations from this parametric study are presented here. By analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of gold nanoparticles at temperatures below the melting point of gold, with different SAM chain lengths and surface coverage properties, we have determined that the material system is metastable. The model and computational results that provide support for this hypothesis are presented.;The second material system investigated, namely sintering of aluminum and nickel, is explored in chapter 4. In this chapter MD simulations are used to simulate the kinetic reaction of Ni and Al particles at the nanometer scale. By ‘ longevity’ must be understood the length of time during which life is exhibited in an individual.1 Unless we introduce the term ‘ individual,’ and assign to it a definite meaning, we become involved in numerous difficulties when making a comparison of the length of life in different species of organic beings. However important in a zoological sense the definition of ‘ individual’ may be which regards the various forms and existences appertaining to a species between ovum and ovum, as the individual of that species, for physiological purposes, such a definition cannot be accepted. The whole product of a fertilized germ, whilst it no doubt, in many cases, agrees with all requirements as a definition of the individual of a species, is yet, in many other cases, open to .muchobjection. In the Vertebrata, in Mollusca, in most Insects, such a definition is unobjectionable; but when we consider the numerous examples of asexual reproduction we are led into difficulty. ‘ It seems a questionable use of language to say that the countless masses of Anacharis alsinastrum which, within these few years, have grown up in our rivers, canals, and ponds are all parts of one individual.’i And yet, as this plant does not seed in England, these countless masses, having arisen by asexual multiplication, must be so regarded, if the above definition be accepted.
