Gone Raw

gone raw
With Kennedy (and his push) gone, who on The Raw roster should get his push?

Remember it has to be a face superstar…I guess they can turn someone face…

MVP definitely in my opinion because MVP has all the tools to be in the main event. MVP has good solid wrestling ability great mic skills and great charisma. MVP is definitely entertaining whether he’s on the mic or he’s wrestling. MVP is getting old so i think WWE should utilize his talents while they can and try their best to push him and make him a big time superstar before it’s too late. MVP connects well with the fans and he’s very popular among WWE fans. MVP might be getting a push because he won the match for his tag team and MVP isn’t that injury prone so nobody expects him just to disappear while he’s getting a push. MVP is talented and underrated in WWE and i think he can do really well and take opportunities from a push.

 Arizona Motel

Arizona Motel

$17.98

Frontman and co-founder Chris Gaffney’s untimely death in April 2008 ensures that Arizona Motel is the final release from this rootsy country-soul quintet. Unfortunately, the band was just starting to receive national recognition due to constant touring when Gaffney was diagnosed with liver cancer. At least they had time to record a final set and leave on a high note, as this album is a logical continuation of the two previous studio projects and one live disc. Gaffney is in fine form, singing the majority of the songs and infusing them with his heartfelt honesty. Opener “A Lot of Days Are Gone” is particularly affecting, especially in retrospect. On it, guitar-slinging shotgun rider Dave Gonzalez trades lead vocals as Gaff sings “There was always time, but now it’s slipped away” for a honky tonk ballad that can also be seen as a moving summary of Gaffney’s life. The legendary Dan Penn, who produced both previous studio sets, returns for five (of the 14) tracks, and he wrote two of those, including the closing “Break Free,” which features one of Gaffney’s most emotional vocals. The rest are credited to the band, which keeps the sound appropriately stripped down yet not raw. The twangy R&B approach is best captured on the ballad “Ordinary Soul,” a weeper that hits the sweet spot between genres as effectively as any in the group’s catalog. It’s highlighted by guest Joe Terry’s (Dave Alvin, the Skeletons) piano, a subtle yet essential addition to the majority of these songs. The members get a rare chance to solo on “Light It Again Charlie,” the only instrumental and one of the few instances where Gonzalez opens up on guitar. “Soul Mountain” balances between country, blues, and gospel on an upbeat shuffle offset by the rest of the typically slower tunes. A few covers highlighted by Connie Smith’s “I’ll Come Running” and Hank Williams’ “When You’re Tired of Breaking Other Hearts” pepper the disc, and Gaffney dips into George Jones’ expressive territory…

 Become You

Become You

$7.99

Indigo Girls’ eighth studio album, released 15 years after their first, finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers in a sense starting over. Using their regular backup band of keyboardist Carol Isaacs, bassist Claire Kenny, and drummer Brady Blade, but only a couple of guest musicians — in contrast to albums that featured lots more players, many of them well known — and returning to producer Peter Collins, who worked with them on their second, fourth, and fifth albums, they have stripped down their approach to something approaching the folk-rock style with which they began. The restrained instrumentation and arrangements focus attention on the songs themselves, and Ray and Saliers, as usual writing separately and alternating tracks, have similar things to say. Eleven of the 12 songs are addressed by an “I” to a “you” (the exception, “She’s Saving Me,” might as well be), and for the most part they deal in romantic complications, with the “I” looking back on a past romance or detailing the difficulties that may lead to a breakup. In the opening track and first single, Ray’s “Moment of Forgiveness,” for example, the narrator notes that two years have gone by since her lover left and asks, hopelessly, “When are you gonna come home?” Ray is characteristically more raw in her singing and in her expression; she also provides the album’s musical contrasts, whether it’s the “Games People Play”-style Southern soul of “Moment of Forgiveness” or the Mexican tone of “Nuevas Senoritas.” Saliers is more abstract, titling one of her laments “Deconstruction” and, in “She’s Saving Me,” even offers a more positive statement. But it is Ray’s title track, in which a daughter of the South confronts the region’s reprehensible mythology — not a song of romance — that is the album’s most wrenching and powerful statement. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Bluesoul Belles: The Complete Calla, Port & Roulette Recordings

Bluesoul Belles: The Complete Calla, Port & Roulette Recordings

$12.99

The stellar Bluesoul Belles: The Complete Calla, Port & Roulette Recordings spotlights Betty Lavette and Carol Fran, two of the more criminally underrated singers from soul music’s mid-’60s golden era. Unearthing two dozen tracks from the Calla, Port, and Roulette vaults, many of them previously unreleased alternate takes, the set offers a persuasive argument that, while never earning the critical respect or commercial kudos of their contemporaries, both women deserve consideration alongside the greats of the period. Lavette’s opening “Let Me Down Easy,” a staple of the Northern soul scene and the countless anthologies it’s yielded, is far and away the most recognizable cut here — the song is her masterpiece, a blisteringly poignant requiem for romance gone bad distinguished by its unique, tango-like rhythm and sweeping string arrangement. The remaining seven tracks don’t reach the same peaks, but from the Motown-inspired stomp of “What I Don’t Know (Won’t Hurt Me)” to the gospel-inflected “Cry Me a River,” Lavette’s versatility and raw power ring through loud and clear. Although Lavette receives top billing, Fran’s contributions comprise fully two-thirds of the disc; best known for her latter-day blues efforts with guitarist husband Clarence Holliman, the aching beauty of her mid-’60s soul sides is revelatory. Though rooted in the blues, her crystalline vocals were nevertheless ideally suited to the uptown style and sophistication of her Port dates; the chart failure of these recordings is baffling, and in particular the remarkable “Any Day Love Walks In” merits the label of lost classic. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

 Dead Space

Dead Space

$19.99

Hostile aliens and claustrophobia rule the day in Dead Space, a survival horror game in the vein of the classic film Alien. Dead Space takes place in the distant future when Earth’s lust for raw materials has extended deep into the galaxy, and giant ships roam the cosmos mining planets for resources. Gamers climb into the spacesuit of systems engineer Isaac Clarke, sent with a team of investigators to the massive USG Ishimura to determine why communications have gone dead. Once aboard, Clarke discovers that the more than 1,000 crewmembers, including his love interest Nicole, all seem to be missing, dead, or transformed into hideous alien mutants. To make matters worse, Clarke’s transport ship is destroyed, his fellow investigators are slaughtered, and he is forced to scramble through the Ishimura’s labyrinthine corridors weaponless and alone. The game’s action takes place from a third-person perspective, and the narrative is revealed in classic survival horror fashion through messages scrawled in blood, the dying utterances of mortally wounded crewmembers, and any discarded logs or journals players may stumble upon. Gamers can loot corpses for credits which can then be used in the ship’s many automated vending machines to purchase weapons, upgrade Clarke’s space suit, and gain access to restricted areas. Much of the ship’s interior has been damaged and thus lacks oxygen or gravity, creating a number of environmental puzzles, and making choices regarding upgrades exceedingly important — powerful weapons offer little solace to a player devoid of oxygen. However, choosing the correct weaponry is also crucial, because the creatures that dwell within the Ishimura are terrifyingly powerful, and unlike most games, the action in Dead Space doesn’t pause while players check their journal, change weapons, or reload. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide

Greg Brown’s best music has always had a loose, casual feel; he reveals more of himself when he sounds like he’s not forcing the music than in those rare moments when he’s genuinely concentrating on his muse, and he’s let his breezy side take the wheel on his 27th album, 2011′s Freak Flag. According to Brown, he was well into the recording of Freak Flag when the Minneapolis studio he was using was struck by lightning; Brown and his producer and guitarist Bo Ramsey were using a Pro-Tools digital setup, and the electric surge wiped away nearly all the tracks they’d laid down. Brown’s response was to head down to Memphis and start over, where he saved one tune from the previous sessions, and replaced the rest with brand new songs. Freak Flag’s title tune, the one holdover from the initial sessions, seems to be a bit more carefully crafted than the eight other Brown originals on board, but overall, the material doesn’t seem especially different; these songs find him very much in his element, marrying sly but heartfelt vocals to slinky melodies that split the difference between folky simplicity and bluesy grit (the latter aided considerably by Ramsey’s raw, funky guitar work), and telling his tales with wit, intelligence, and a touch of Midwestern zen. Brown and his band cut a comfortable but potent groove when Freak Flag locks in on tunes like “Where Are You Going When You’re Gone” and “I Don’t Know Anybody in This Town.” It’s the gentler numbers on Freak Flag that prove problematic; while Brown’s voice has always been craggy, on these sessions his register has dropped noticeably, and he tends to wobble uncomfortably while trying to hold a note, and the froggy murk of his vocals rob “Flat Stuff” and “Tenderhearted Child” of much of their power. No one has ever expected Brown to sound like Pavarotti, but here his vocals aren’t as strong a vehicle for his songs as they once were. It doesn’t seem as if Brown is the least bit worried about this, but Freak Flag is…

For many years, Metallica’s 1987 EP Garage Days Re-Revisited was the most sought-after item in their catalog; it was constantly bootlegged in the ’90s, and often supplemented by a host of covers Metallica had released on singles and compilations throughout the years. By 1998, the band had understandably grown frustrated with this situation and decided to confront the problem head-on by reissuing all these rarities. Savvy businessmen that they are, they also realized they needed to give hardcore fans who already owned all the covers a reason to purchase the new set — hence, the expansion of the Garage Days EP to the double-disc blowout Garage, Inc. The second disc’s rarities are balanced by the first disc’s new covers, the bulk of which were recorded following the Reload tour. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that these covers recall the blooze ‘n’ boogie heavy rock of the Loads, but what is a surprise is that Metallica seems to have found their footing in this style through other people’s songs. Whether it’s Bob Seger, Blue ? yster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Nick Cave, or the all-star jam on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone,” the band effortlessly makes the songs seem like their own, through a bizarre mix of respect and ballsy irreverence. Sure, it may not be nearly as raw as early Metallica, but it is a better listen than either of the Load records. And if raw is what you want, the equally diverse disc two provides all the thrills you could hope for. At one time, it might have seemed a little odd that Metallica would cover Budgie, Diamond Head, the Misfits, and Queen, but if Garage, Inc. proves anything, it’s that the group’s musical instincts, risks, and sense of humor have made them the greatest metal band of the ’80s and ’90s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Korn III: Remember Who You Are [Special Edition]

Korn III: Remember Who You Are [Special Edition]

$18.98

Taking a cue from the Van Halen playbook, the III in the title of Korn III: Remember Who You Are isn? t a numbering device, it signifies an opening of another phase in Korn? s career. Somehow, the band has bypassed a Korn II altogether in their discography, but it? s commonly acknowledged that the tail-end of the 2000s found the group floundering a bit, going so far as to flirt with the Matrix in an attempt to figure out which direction to go now that they? ve hit middle age. This is where the subtitle comes in: the group has certainly remembered who they are, ditching all the affectations that crippled their muddled 2007 eponymous album and rediscovering their voice. They? ve gone back to the coiled, furious sputter of their debut, but there? s no disguising that Korn is an older band, substituting precision for frenzy without diluting their power. That? s a crucial difference: they? re not desperately attempting to re-create their youth, they? re reconnecting with their passions and re-interpreting them from the perspective as veterans. Sometimes they stumble — in many ways, Jonathan Davis has the trickiest problem by putting actual words to their emotions — but as sheer galvanizing force, Korn III delivers due to that combination of raw aggression and musical finesse. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

 Last Fair Deal

Last Fair Deal

$11.99

While Rory Block had been a remarkably consistent artist over the course of 30 years, if all it took was for her to leave Rounder Records to make a record like Last Fair Deal, one has to wonder why she didn’t do it ages ago. Block is one of the most restless and in-the-field artists in the history of contemporary blues. She has continually dug deeper into the muck and the mire of not only the blues but her personal life, emotionally, spiritually, amorously, and psychically, to bring out what is integral to the creation — not re-creation — of blues music. She has suffered, endured, and continued to make music that is not only compelling, but necessary for any accurate understanding of the cultural history of the blues tradition because she is perhaps the living female embodiment of it. Last Fair Deal is a record stripped of artifice or niceties. It is raw, feral, tender, sacred, sinful, lusty, and enlightening. On this recording, Block has assembled a collection of songs — written, re-arranged, and restored — that showcases the guitar as an extension of her physical and spiritual body. She writes in the liner notes that this is her tribute to the instrument that has seen her through the darkness, that she wanted the guitar to be an orchestra on its own. She succeeds in diamonds. Beginning with “Gone Again,” and its opening roar of a Harley Davidson and her whip-smart slide playing becoming the timbre of the grain in her voice, the guitar becomes the poem, and her voice underlines, accents, and punctuates it. Block’s agility and extension of blues form here is astonishing. Her slide work is effortless; it flies, stings, and stings. “Sookie Sookie” is a slide blues that rings with the same tension that John Fahey’s best work did, but Block is more aggressive; she bends herself to the guitar’s will. The lyrics delve deep into anger, brokenness, and the seeming impossibility of enduring love. But it is on Son House’s “County Farm Blues,” “Amazing Grace,” a…

 Lochloosa

Lochloosa

$17.98

Three years after their celebrated debut, Blackwater, north central Florida’s Mofro return with another offering of steamy, greasy “front-porch soul” produced by Dan Prothero. Lochloosa refers to Lake Lochloosa, on the outskirts of Jacksonville, FL, the earthly and archetypal home to Mofro’s John “JJ” Grey and Daryl Hance. A raw meld of swampy funk, back-to-basics rock, and Southern soul bleeds from these grooves, as it did on Blackwater. Lochloosa is a hand-carved example of the kind of music that happens after midnight when all the civilians have gone home. Things get blurry, intimate, less self-conscious, sexual, maybe even a little dangerous. A practical contrast would be from Florida’s own terrain: this set feels more like Tony Joe White than it does Lynyrd Skynyrd. Oh yeah, that is a good thing. The unabashedly masculine, heartfelt concern for the terrain and a way of life that comes from it is presented with wiry, tough, sinewy songs that never stoop to whining or cheap, sloganeering ploys. Here are songs that howl with a down-home recklessness that balances rough-and-tumble celebratory hedonism with folksy backwoods spirituality. On the title track, Mike Sharpio’s Fender Rhodes slips the tune out unobtrusively with a laid-back soul groove that is widened by Hance’s slide guitar and a lonely whispering harmonica courtesy of Grey. When he begins singing, straight from the fire in his belly, about spiritual homesickness for a place that is disappearing, he is speaking figuratively as well as literally: “I swear it’s ten thousand degrees in the shade/Lord have mercy/How much I love it? Every mosquito/Every rattlesnake/Every cane break/Everything? All we need is one more/Damned developer/Tearin’ her heart out? Lord I need her and she’s slippin’ away? .” Desire drips from a heart breaking with sadness, love, and rage. The drums shuffle more insistently; the groove gets longer, more intense, more mournful and sweet. In the grain of his voice is the sou…

 Lux

Lux

$15.98

An honest-to-goodness rock band on Kranky Records may be a rarity, but Disappears would be in a class by themselves no matter what label released their debut album, Lux. The band? s sound — hypnotic swirls of guitar, to-the-point drums, snarled and sneered vocals — is as simple as it is difficult to pin down: Disappears have an undeniable swagger, but they? re too hazy to be garage rock; they? re too gritty to fit in with the mostly wispy shoegaze revival; they? re noisy but not noise, raw but not lo-fi. Over the course of Lux? s ten songs, the band reveals a kinship with the darkest, most narcotic bands of the shoegaze era (Spacemen 3, Jesus and Mary Chain) and some of the most aloof, acerbic punk legends (Suicide, the Fall). However, Disappears actually have the most in common with vocalist/guitarist Brian Case? s other projects, the Ponys and 90 Day Men, in spirit if not in sound. Songs like ? Gone Completely? and ? Old Friend? mix the Ponys? directness with 90 Day Men? s ambition, and share the heads-down intensity of both those bands. At times, Disappears? songs are so driving that their groove threatens to turn into a rut, and some of Lux? s best moments occur when the band takes a breather and changes things up: ? Not Nothing? allows Disappears to crack a smile with its irresistible beat and bassline, the title track borrows some of the Velvet Underground? s chugging, deadpan cool, and on ? Little Ghost? Case trades his snarl for trance-inducing singing. Still, the fact that Lux is almost too consistent is hardly a problem for fans of the trippy, black-hearted rock that Disappears deliver so ably. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

 Men Without Women/Voice of America

Men Without Women/Voice of America

$24.98

Here is a double-disc set that makes a whole lot of sense. Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul cut a pair of back to back albums in 1982 and 1984, respectively. The first, Men Without Women, was made while Little Stevie was still a member of the E Street Band, and the second, Voice of America after the success of 1983′s single “Solidarity,” was issued after he (temporarily) left. What’s so interesting having them paired like this is to hear the “progression” from one to the next. The first set featured a lot of E Street Players like Clarence Clemons, Garry Tallent, and Max Weinberg, as well a s a couple of Amboy Dukes, and a couple of ex-Young Rascals in Dino Danelli and Felix Cavaliere, and Jean Beauvoir from the Plasmatics — it also contains some guest spots by Gary “U.S.” Bonds. The sound of the disc was primitive, raw, horn-heavy, rooted deep in Southern soul garage band ethics and drenched in anguished anthemic, wailing love songs such as “Lyin’ in a Bed of Fire,” “Inside of me,” “Until the Good Is Gone,” and “Under the Gun.” !984′s Voice of America was largely a political record, self-produced by Van Zandt utilizing all the latest in studio trickery — except a Fairlight — including pulsing synthesizers and drum machines. It’s the recording that sounds dated here, though it contains some great songs with killer riffs. Essentially a hard rock record drenched in keyboards, Voice of America was the first offering to express outrage at United States’ role in training killers in El Salvador and Chile, and the overthrow of the Sandinista in Nicaragua, as well as the government’s continued support of the apartheid system in South Africa. While some of the lyrics are a bit hamfisted, they make their point well and the album contains some inspiring tunes: the title track, “Solidarity,” (the hit single), “Out of the Darkness,” “Los Desaparecidos,” and “Undefeated,” the funk and roll of “Among the Believers,” and the reggae-drenched “I …

Lidell’s Multiply is more a successor to those two albums than his first solo full-length, 2000′s relatively rigid and academic Muddlin Gear. Only now, he’s gone a rather straight-laced route, retreating to things like mid-’60s Stax and Motown, James Brown, pre-Revolution Prince, and oh, you get the idea. The focus here is on Lidell’s affected (if occasionally affecting) voice, real instruments, and real songs. Lidell’s voice is rarely treated, unlike the alien moments on the Super_Collider albums, and it will be compared to a few soul legends, though it’s just as deserving of parallels to John Fogerty and semi-obscure journeyman singer Shawn Smith (who, as part of a duo called Pigeonhed, made an unrecognized precursor to Head On in 1993). With about as much effort, Lidell could do wicked impressions of any earnest post-grunge vocalist. Though he’s not against using electronics to his advantage — as on the zapping, slightly hallucinatory “When I Come Back Around,” which lands somewhere around an imagined Basement Jaxx remix of “Controversy” — plenty of songs are knocked out with Hammond organs, horn blurts, handclaps, and all the other elements to make it as authentic as any neo-soul release. Since this is out on Warp, many will question whether or not Lidell’s being ironic, but it’s plain that he’s being sincere, despite the affectations. He really is pouring everything he has into the whole thing, but there’s so much overly earnest, reverential, “let’s get back to making real music” energy floating around that you can sense it nibbling away at the desire to make something that sounds like today. And if that doesn’t bother you, a couple issues with this album remain — one being that at least half …

 Red Gone Wild: Thee Album

Red Gone Wild: Thee Album

Back once again with the ill behavior, Redman’s Red Gone Wild: Thee Album is the kind of bumpy ice cream van ride through the ghetto that fans crave. The wit is there and as strong as ever with lines Kool Keith would salivate over like “I’m in my underwear like Damon Wayans in Colors” (“Pimp Nutz”) or “My bitch be like ‘damn, baby, wash your feet’/She say the hair on my chest look like taco meat” (“Sumtn 4 Urrbody”) or a whole bunch of others that are way too nasty to repeat. Old friends like Def Squad kingpins Keith Murray and Erick Sermon are on the guest list along with a whole honor roll of old-schoolers who all feel as vital as ever. Producer Pete Rock brings a piano and horn banger to the album (“Gimme One”), Timbaland is more aggressive than usual with his beat (“Put It Down”), and Scott Storch mashes the Neptunes and Kraftwerk sounds with his inspired loops (“Freestyle Freestyle”), but as big and as diverse as the guest list is, the album hangs and flows effortlessly. It has everything to do with Red’s bottomless bag of punch lines and his uplifting spirit, which could make you smile even as he’s verbally cutting you to pieces. You could argue that the blaxploitation-flavored “Soopaman Luva” suite would be a better ending than the raw party starter “Suicide,” but that’s about it, unless you think party song followed by smoking song is redundant, which probably means you wouldn’t enjoy any Redman album. That he’s able to throw it back to the good old days after all this time, fame, and his ventures into other media just speaks to how much natural talent lives inside the man. How he makes it look so easy and backs up every outrageous claim of domination with whip-smart proof is nothing short of stunning. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

 Roots

Roots

$13.96

Curtis Mayfield’s visionary album, a landmark creation every bit as compelling and as far-reaching in its musical and extra-musical goals as Marvin Gaye’s contemporary What’s Goin’ On. Opening on the hit “Get Down,” the album soars on some of the sweetest and most eloquent — yet driving — soul sounds heard up to that time. Mayfield’s growing musical ambitions, first manifested on the Curtis album, and his more sophisticated political sensibilities, presented with a lot of raw power on Curtis Live!, are pulled together here in a new, richer studio language, embodied in extended song structures (“Underground”), idealistic yet lyrically dazzling anthems (“We Got to Have Peace,” “Keep On Keeping On,” and, best of all, the soaring “Beautiful Brother of Mine”), and impassioned blues (“Now You’re Gone”). The music is even bolder than the material on the Curtis album, with Mayfield expanding his instrumental range to the level of a veritable soul orchestra; and the recording is better realized, as Mayfield, with that album and a tour behind him, shows a degree of confidence that only a handful of soul artists of this era could have mustered. Charly Records had this album out on CD in the 1980s, but Rhino’s acquisition of the Curtom catalog in 1996 led to a remastered and expanded reissue in 1999 with superior sound, detailed annotation, and the addition of four bonus tracks. Apart from a slow, funky, stripped-down but eminently listenable demo of “Underground” (which reveals just how sophisticated Mayfield’s conceptions — forget the finished versions — of his songs were), the latter consist of the single edits of “Get Down,” “We Got to Have Peace,” and “Beautiful Brother of Mine.” They seem redundant after the album versions, though they don’t detract at all from the extraordinary value of this mid-priced CD. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
