Growing Vegetables In Containers

Why Grow Herbs in Pots by Julie Brown
If you’ve ever visited the country, you probably remember seeing farms with rows of vegetables of all sorts. Crops were planted to feed families, and sometimes to transport somewhere else to sell. If you are not growing herbs as resell crops, you probably don’t need a lot of plants for you and your family. Growing herbs in pots makes good sense for a number of reasons.
Another memory you may have is of your mother’s potted plants. They spent winters in the house and summers on the porch. At certain times of the year, they were moved back and forth from the inside to the outside to catch rain and sun, as well as to keep them from freezing. It was a lot of moving, depending on how many potted plants there were.
When you pot your herbs, you control the elements much better than you can if they are in the ground. Herbs are like most other living plants. They don’t like sudden changes in temperature. You wouldn’t want to take them from very warm outside conditions to air conditioned space any more than you would want to take them from heated interior space to cold conditions on the outside.
Some herbs survive better in containers than they do planted in the ground. In a pot, the herb doesn’t have to compete with other growing things for its nutrients in the soil. There is no threat of insect infestation from the ground either, and if insects want to attack from the air, a potted plant can be moved from the area where the insects are.
With potted herbs, when the time comes for harvest, you can carry it inside the house and pick from it whenever you please. It is very convenient to gather and use your herbs while you are cooking or to toss them in salads.
Spreading type herbs can be restricted by growing them in pots. If you want to have more than what is in one pot, you can propagate some of the plant to another container. As mentioned earlier, you will only need one plant of many of the herbs you produce.
Rodents and other animals are much less likely to plunder your herbs while they are potted. If a bad element does present itself to the earth planted Herb Garden, you have little choice with what you can do other than to build a fence around it.
If none of the above reasons are important, it is simple to find a plot and plant your garden in the conventional way. This might serve your purposes well and present no problems whatsoever.
Growing herbs in pots is a good way to have a small garden that can be relocated when and where you want.
