Green Revolution Technologies have made India self-sufficient in food production but unable to sustain soil productivity. A quantum leap in production of over 100 million tones was achieved in just two decades (1960-1970). But during the 1980s and 1990s it was a struggle to add on another 10 million tonnes despite good monsoons and the increasing supply of inputs of fertilizers, high yielding seeds, pesticides as well as water through irrigation. High costs of inputs have turned farming into a loss-making enterprise while leading to severe environmental degradation.

Pharmacology of Some Traditional Anthelmintic Plants

Pharmacology of Some Traditional Anthelmintic Plants

$72.99

Helminth parasites are the major constraint in successful productivity of livestock industries, and the conundrum in human health. The all-pervasive evolution of anthelmintic resistance among veterinary parasites against virtually all available commercial drugs and the general endorsement of organic farming have posed serious impediments to the effective control of helminth infestations. A vigorous search for alternative measures during the past decade includes evaluation of traditional medicines, vaccination and reversal of resistance. However, most of these, if at all they work, are hardly of practical values, as they involve sophisticated technologies and techniques. A readily accessible and cost-effective method is the use of traditional medicines. Therefore, the prevailing problems have revived a vigour to the study of medicinal plants used for the treatment of parasitic infections. This work is about the assessment of indigenous anthelmintic plants of the Mizo tribes of India. The study should help to clarify the feasibility of ethnomedicinal practices and their potential roles in pharmaceutical industries.

The Tea Horse Road: China's Ancient Trade Road to Tibet

The Tea Horse Road: China’s Ancient Trade Road to Tibet

$40.55

This is the first comprehensive visual documentation of the Tea Horse Road that takes the audience on a journey from the birthplace of the tea plant along the oldest trade route of tea in the world. It is also one of the oldest and highest trade routes. Accompanying Michael Freeman’s spectacular photographers is text drawing on first-hand experiences, primary research and extensive archival research by Dr. Selena Ahmed. Starting in tea forests in the mountains of southern Yunnan, through Tibet and into India, it explores the rich cultural practices and biological diversity of the communities the Tea Horse Road passes. The audience gets to know the plants and people, the lives and landscapes experienced through the exchange of tea. The book places the historical Tea-Horse Road in a contemporary context through a discussion on current issues including biodiversity, livelihoods, organic farming, globalization, health, and antioxidants. The book should thus be attractive to a wide audience, not just tea enthusiasts, geographers, or naturalists. The authors are well-positioned to write this account as experts in their fields. Michael Freeman is one the most widely published photographers. He has published over120 books, was a leading photographer for Smithsonian for 3 decades, teaches courses on photography, and specializes on the cultures of South East Asia. Ethnobotanist Dr. Selena Ahmed specializes in tea research. She spent 4 years in Yunnan studying links between cultural practices, the environment, and human wellbeing associated with tea production and consumption. She is currently continuing research on tea at the Antioxidants Research Lab at Tufts University.
