Chapters: Beauvoir (Biloxi, Mississippi), Uss Cairo, Vicksburg National Military Park, Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site, Jefferson Davis Presidential Library. Excerpt: Beauvoir is the historic post-war home and Presidential library of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, begun in 1848 at Biloxi, Mississippi. The main house and library were badly damaged, and other outbuildings were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Beauvoir survived a similar onslaught from Hurricane Camille in 1969. Beauvoir was the location of the retirement home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The compound consisted of approximately 608 acres (2.46 km) when Davis lived there (today, the site is approximately 52 acres (210,000 m) in size). Beauvoir is located in Biloxi, Mississippi across US Highway 90 from Biloxi Beach. The name “Beauvoir” means “beautiful to view”. The compound consists of a Louisiana raised cottage-style plantation residence, a botanical garden, a former Confederate veterans home, a modern gift shop, a Confederate Soldier Museum, the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Museum, various outbuildings, and a historic Confederate cemetery which includes the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier. Five out of seven of these buildings were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina and replicas are being planned (see below). The house was surrounded with cedars, oaks and magnolia trees and at one time had an orange grove behind it. The home faces the Gulf of Mexico and Spanish moss hangs from many of the large old trees on the property. Oyster Bayou, a freshwater impoundment and bayhead swamp; once connected directly to the Mississippi Sound and runs across the property behind the main house from West to East. Excerpt: Ross Clifford (born 1951) is an Australian Baptist theologian, political commentator, radio personality and author. A former lawyer who later joined the ministry, Clifford became a campaigner on moral issues while a suburban Sydney pastor in the 1980s. He has since become a prominent figure in the broader Christian community, serving as a head of several religious organisations and serving as an occasional media spokesperson. He unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the New South Wales Legislative Council in 2003, but retains a successful radio program on Sydney station 2CH. Clifford was born and raised in the northern suburbs of Sydney, and had a private school education. His conversion to faith in Christ occurred at the 1959 Billy Graham crusade in Sydney. Clifford initially studied law and obtained the Diploma of Law from the Solicitors Admission Board of NSW. He worked as a solicitor in the infamous inner Sydney suburb of Kings Cross and then served as a barrister specialising in family law in the Northern Territory and New South Wales. Although he had trained as a lawyer, Clifford decided to enter the Christian ministry, and studied for the BTh at Morling Baptist Theological College in Sydney. He initially served as pastor at South Windsor Baptist Church, and first became involved in public life in the 1980s, when he became a campaigner for moral standards in advertising and publications while pastor of the Gymea Baptist Church. He also contributed to church and public discourses concerning right-to-life issues, and the proposed Australian Bill of Rights that was debated and defeated during Bob Hawke’s term as Prime Minister of Australia. In the early 1980s he took a sabbatical from his preacher’s post to study apologetics at the Simon Green… More:

Excerpt: Her Majesty’s Theatre – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sir John Vanbrugh painted by Godfrey KnellerThe end of the 17th century was a period of intense rivalry amongst London’s actors, and in 1695 there was a split in the United Company, who had a monopoly on the performance of drama at their two theatres. Dramatist and architect John Vanbrugh saw this as an opportunity to break the duopoly of the patent theatres, and in 1703 he acquired a former stable yard, at a cost of £2000, for the construction of a new theatre on the Haymarket. In the new business, he hoped to improve the share of profits that would go to playwrights and actors. He raised the money by subscription, probably amongst members of the Kit-Cat Club: To recover them , therefore, to their due Estimation, a new Project was form’d of building them a stately theatre in the Hay-Market, by Sir John Vanbrugh, for which he raised a Subscription of thirty Persons of Quality, at one hundred Pounds each, in Consideration whereof every Subscriber, for his own Life, was to be admitted to whatever Entertainments should be publickly perform’d there, without farther Payment for his Entrance. John Vanbrugh’s notice of subscription for the new theatre He was joined in the enterprise by his principal associate and manager William Congreve and an actors’ co-operative led by Thomas Betterton. The theatre provided the first alternative to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, built in 1663 and the Lincoln’s Inn, founded in 1660 (forerunner of the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, built in 1728). The theatre’s site is the second oldest such site in London that remains in use. These three post-interregnum theatres defined the shape and use of modern theatres. The land for the theatre was held on a lease renew… More:

How can a lone female of “a certain age” take her last stand on a stony wedge of land in the mountains of Northern New Mexico? Will she find a job, learn to chop wood, be eaten by a bear or give it up and fall in love again? “Beside the Rio Hondo” is a memoir that explores in depth Phaedra Greenwood’s connection with the natural world and simultaneous need for community. Her ex-husband gives her a year to live in the old adobe where they raised their children; then he plans to sell it so they can split the proceeds. But she wants to stay in the house forever. She has a year to come up with her own financing to buy out his half of the property or negotiate a deal with the neighbors. The house is falling apart, her money is running out and she has never applied for a loan in her life. It’s a hell of a time to decide to have an epiphany. “For over three decades I have made my home in the Taos area of Northern New Mexico,” the author says, “not just because I love the spare and dramatic landscape, but also because I am intrigued by the complex layers of history and culture. I admire the devotion of the artists and craftsmen to their work, the loving care New Mexicans bestow on their churches and the close family ties that bond them in community. As I struggle with my garden, my orchard and old adobe “casa,” I absorb with gratitude my neighbors’ rural savvy and the skills these tenacious hunters, fishermen, and ranchers have developed over the centuries to survive and thrive in the high mountain desert. Life here is hard, but often delicious. The energy, exotic flavors and bright colors of Taos are unique.” Phaedra Greenwood is a freelance writer/photographer whose poems, essays and stories have appeared in many local newspapers, magazines and anthologies. She has won numerous literary prizes including the Katherine Anne Porter Award. As a journalist and columnist for “The Taos News,” she received two first place awards in 2000 from the New Mexico Press Association for

Grace knows her life is over, done, kaput. Nothing left, but to hang around, knee deep in boredom, and wait for death. So, when her witch neighbor, Belinda, involves her in a search for the Druid’s lost book she agrees. Grace is level headed and responsible, but she is also a dreamer. She discovers this surprising trait when she is introduced to the world beyond the shimmer gate. With one foot firmly planted in reality and the other sinking into the world of magic she follows Belinda into an adventure of mystery and danger. Belinda takes Grace through the nearby shimmer gate and into the garden of the gnomes, where they meet the Old Gnome himself. He tells them the book is in the dangerous icelands of Siberia. The Old One sends two gnomes, a mother and daughter, with them to deal with the hostile half-breeds. The most eminent danger, however, is from the dark wizard Wolfhart, who is trapped in the underworld. Grace, Belinda and the gnomes travel to Co Kerry, Ireland for a magic talisman blessed with a protective spell. It is a well-known fact, in Ireland, that the fairies sometimes steal human babies and leave one of their deformed babies in its place. Such children are called changelings. Tom O’Hagan is a changeling, however, he is the human baby raised by the fairies and gifted with longevity and extraordinary strength. His expertise in early religions, especially the Celtics, makes him the logical protector to accompany Belinda and Grace on their mission. He has given up on finding a human mate, but is instantly attracted to Grace. However he realizes that he must move very slowly with her, which is no problem since they are plunged into one dangerous adventure after another.

It was therefore quite natural, that, when they went down next day, they should feel inclined to give him a surprise. So they concerted a plan of sneaking quietly around the house that they might come upon him suddenly, for they saw him working in his garden, hoeing up the weeds. ” Now let ‘s astonish him,” said William. “That’s a jolly idea,” said Fred, while Alice said nothing at all, but was as pleased as she could be. Climbing Plants

Climbing Plants

INTRODUCTION A HANDY treatise on climbing plants for gardens is a welcome addition to garden books. Mr. Watson has for many years lived among climbers from all parts of the world. His chapters on the best climbers for gardens and greenhouses will be useful to all lovers of horticulture. A clear fact in our gardening is that but little of the infinite variety and beauty of the climber is seen ill many gardens this hook should help to a change for the better. After the gift of trees of the earth-mother, the greatest for the gardener are the climbers that adorn them with infinite grace. It is needless to describe their beauty. Botanical and gardening descriptions of them are numer- ous, and nurserymen send out attractive lists of them. So all is well except their cultivation, which is often a dismal failure. Impressed with the fact that in many large gardens it was rare to see a trace of the beauty of climbing plants, and wondering why it was so, J began to make little experiments first of all, and in obedience to their natural habit, which is to grow on trees and bushes in many lands of mountall copse and shore, I have planted them in every position, from an orchard hedgerow to a grove of Magnolias, and have had much success. The plan was to plant one at the base of some shrub or tree in obedience to the natural habit of the climber, and this is best done when the trees and shrubs are young and the ground is fresh, but I have done it in all conditions. Sometimes a tree or shrub overpowers the plant, but this will not happen to the freer kinds, like the Indian species of Clematis, which are so vigorous that one needs have no fear of them. They are easily raised from seed also, so that one is spared the trouble which comes from grafting. Most interest, however, came from getting the larger-flowered Japanese or Chinese species into picturesque and artistic ways. These plants creep up the tree unaided by training or staking, and if not as vigorous as they would be if

 Fritz And Annie Lippe Family

Fritz And Annie Lippe Family

$33.98

Fritz and Annie Lippe Family—German Cotton Farmers in Early 1900s Texas describes the childhood of Fritz and Annie beside the Brazos River in east Texas, their families’ move west, their courtship and marriage, and the rearing of their eleven children on rented farms. In some years, the cotton crop was profitable. In other years, drought, boll weevils, or floods destroyed the crop. The children missed the first few weeks of school in the fall because picking the cotton took priority over education. The family raised most of their own food—vegetables from the garden; hogs for meat, lard, and soap; cattle for meat, milk and butter; and chickens for meat and eggs. They grew corn, grinding it into cornmeal to make bread. Money from the cotton sale was used to buy the few items that were not made or grown, such as coffee, sugar, and farm tools. Their many narrow escapes from death due to accidents, injuries, and illnesses are described here. It is amazing that all of the children lived to adulthood. Annie almost died after giving birth to one of the younger children, but she recovered and lived to the age of 103. Every Lippe son and son-in-law served in the military, some of them during World War II, some in combat. All returned safely. Several grandchildren and their spouses also served. Eight of the eleven children and the wives of two deceased sons contributed photographs and stories of life on the family farms. The author inherited many letters and photos from her mother, who was Fritz and Annie’s eldest daughter. The book also contains stories of Fritz and Annie’s children as adults. They all became hardworking solid citizens and remained true to the faith in God instilled in them by their parents.
